A Dream of Maya

Leo was fourteen, which, in his opinion, was a difficult age to navigate. It was an age of awkward silences and too-loud laughter, of homework and video games, and, most recently, of Maya.
He first saw her in the library, hunched over a history textbook, a single strand of hair falling over her concentration. What really caught his attention, though, was when she looked up and broke into a grin. Her smile was infectious, lighting up her entire face, and it was the first thing he thought of every morning.
He started to see her everywhere. In the cafeteria, she would tell hilarious stories about her younger brother, her eyes sparkling as she described his latest antics. In the hallways, she would stop to help a younger student who had dropped their books, offering a kind word and a warm smile. She wasn't just pretty; she was genuinely a good person, and Leo was smitten.
Their friendship blossomed slowly at first. He’d "accidentally" bump into her at her locker, a nervous knot in his stomach. They would talk about school, their dreams, and what kind of dogs they wanted when they grew up (she wanted a golden retriever; he wanted a mutt). He loved how she listened, her head tilted, asking thoughtful questions. She always remembered the little things he told her. He remembered how she loved bubble tea, and he would always have a spare twenty-dollar bill ready in case they went out. He started a new notebook to write down his experiences with her.
Their "dates" became his favorite part of the week. They would meet at the park and lie in the grass, pointing out shapes in the clouds. He'd bring his guitar, and she'd sing along to his favorite songs, her voice clear and sweet. Once, they went to an arcade, and she cheered him on as he dominated an air hockey game. Another time, they studied for a history test together at the coffee shop and lost track of time talking about everything and nothing. He felt he could be his true self around her—the slightly nerdy, daydreamy version of himself that he usually kept hidden.
As the months passed, his feelings for her grew. He knew it was love. He was finally ready to tell her how he felt. He’d even planned it perfectly—a picnic at their favorite spot in the park, followed by a heartfelt confession. He told his best friend, Sam, the plan.
"That's so cool, man," Sam said, slinging an arm around his shoulder. "I'm glad you're finally going for it."
"Yeah, me too," Leo said, his heart pounding with excitement. "I mean, we’ve been dating for a while now, but it's time to make it official, you know?"
Sam stopped walking, a puzzled look on his face. "Dating? Dude, what are you talking about? You haven't spoken to her once this entire week. You just sit there and look at her in the cafeteria. We've been telling you to just go and talk to her."
Leo stared at him, the world suddenly tilting sideways. The picnics, the guitar playing, the late-night talks about their favorite animals... it all began to dissolve like smoke in the air. The bubble tea, the history study session, the inside jokes... all the special moments he had so carefully written down in his notebook. He looked down at his shoes, then back up at Sam, a slow, dawning realization spreading across his face.
He had been so in love with the idea of her, with the kindness and warmth he saw from a distance, that his imagination had filled in all the blanks. For an entire week, he had been living a perfect, romantic story that existed only in his mind.
Leo let out a single, astonished laugh. "Oh," he said, the word barely a whisper. "Right. I haven't."
He looked back at the library, where Maya was walking out, laughing with a group of friends. He smiled, a genuine, if slightly dazed, smile. His imaginary year with her hadn't been real, but it had taught him a lot. He’d just have to be a little braver and, you know, actually talk to her. Maybe tomorrow.
